HISTORIC HOME PLANS
GAMBREL ROOF - DUTCH COLONIAL HOMES
The gambrel roof, with its characteristic double slope was especially popular among the Dutch and German immigrants to the New World. The gambrel roof has the advantage of providing much more space in the attic, allowing this part of the home to be used for more than simply storage. Typically the gambrel roof house was built of timber framing throughout. But occassionally examples may be found built in stone, especially in Pennsylvania.
